Can you use a verizon phone bought with a plan that is now expired, and switch it to pay as you go?

Author: I have verizon cell phone that was bought and used with a pre-paid plan. Now the contract time is up and I was wondering if I could use the same phone to switch to verizon’s inpulse pay-as-you-go plan.
